Science, Creation & EvolutionHelix - atheistI agree, but where did our sense of "morality" come from in the first place? There is a difference between "suppressing" and "controlling". We control our impulses not only because of societal pressure but because of a personal "morality". Those who simply suppress their impulses eventually loose control and act on them.
Take away the law (or 'god, who's looking over your shuolder'), and you will see that noble mankind will turn to looting and stealing and killing (You've seen how the Iraqi's reacted when the law was gone, after the Americans invaded! ) This "sense of morality" you speak of is maintained by use of fear of repercussions. It makes us feel safe at night, knowing the police is patroling the neighbourhood, and we have the illusion we might have something that makes us more, better even, than just a primate... ...
Hmm, I will ignore your dig about America and Iraq. You find the same looting and other releasing of greed when earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters hit any area. You have a very fatalistic view of humanity. Not all mankind are that heartless, even atheists have a sense of morality that has nothing to do with society or circumstances. When humans come together to help those displaced by wars, are starving because of famines, or dying from diseases it is not fear of reprisals or the desire for some reward that causes an out pouring of compassion. Muslim suicide bombers are killing themselves and non-combatants out of anger and ethnic superiority. Anarchy is the result of throwing morality out the window and tyranny is the result of greed and the lust for power. |
