Hi everyone,
I am Helix. I study arts and film at the university of Groningen, in Holland. Allow me to share a little anecdote with you:
I did not have a religious upbringing. We never went to church, and I was sent to a school that did not include religious lessons, prayers, sermons etc. As a little kid I was quite curious and asked my mom and dad all sorts of things about the world. My parents must have been quite patient with me, because they explained as much as they could about the moon, the sun, why the sky was blue and space black etc. I remember that on the playground some kids claimed that there was no god, while others were quite certain that there was indeed a god. Some called him allah, others said he was just called god. I wanted to settle the argument on the playground and decided that I should ask a grown-up about it. I must have been 6 years old by then, perhaps younger. When my dad came to pick me up that day, he started to talk to the teacher. I approached them and asked my teacher, (my dad was standing next to him) whether or not there was a god. My teacher remained silent and looked at my dad. I looked at him and was quite surprised to notice that he didn’t say anything either. Why did the two smartest people I know not answer a simple yes or no question?! It was quite an awkward silence I had produced there. My teacher excused himself, and left the question to be answered by my dad.
In retrospective, I now realise: It’s not about what is true and what is not true. It is about WHAT DO PARENTS WANT THEIR CHILDREN TO BELIEVE WHAT IS TRUE.
My dad answered that everyone should find out for himself whether or not there was a god. I have tried that and I’ve come to the conclusions that there isn’t one. But that is of course my opinion.
Well, here was a little piece of my childhood. If you want to respond to my text, feel free to do so.
I might seem a bit provocative now and then, but my intention is not to insult anyone. I'm happy to debate with any of you in the threads here, but let me make it clear: I am a man of science. I am only convinced by hard evidence. But if you think you can proof to me that there is indeed a god, ANY GOD please try it.
