Science, Creation & EvolutionHelix - atheist(1) If someone believes in an unproved scientific theory and it is proved, then his initial faith and his continued faith in that theory is valid and is not blind faith. (2) If someone believes in an unproved scientific theory and it is proved to be false, then continuing in its belief is blind faith. (3) If someone believes in an unproved scientific theory and he has legitimate reasons to believe though the theory has not been proven true or false, then it remains a mystery. Someone putting their faith in God is defined by (1), leaving out the concept of "scientific theory." The first step is to look at the initial reason for the faith, which brings me to your next quote: It's five I stated. (1) prophetic evidence: The Bible contains many prophecies (some fulfilled, and some that will be fulfilled). The odds of 48 prophecies that were fulfilled by Jesus only are said to be 1 in 10^157. Now, we all know this did not happen by chance. God has to be involved in fulfillments of prophecies by this number. One may say, people just put those things in the Bible to make it look good. Well, that brings me to the second point: (2) manuscript evidence: When the dead sea scrolls were found, they were tested to be as old as 1000 years before Christ was born. Those scrolls contained numerous prophecies that Christ Himself fulfilled. Someone might say that they could have been self-fulfilled prophecies. But in order to show something is corrupted, you have to prove it, and it has not been proved. To believe the Bible is not corrupted is highly reasonable because with all the manuscript evidence gathered from different times and different regions of the world, they all agree over 95% (The other remaining percentage is due to faded out letters or words in different verses--these manuscripts can go a long way back, nature will take its course). With those numbers, the Bible is for a fact the most accurate historical document. Not only is it the most accurate, it also contains the highest number of manuscript evidence to support it than any other historical writing. Something can be low in abundance, but accurate. Something can be High in abundance and not accurate. But the evidence of biblical scripture is high in abundance and high in accuracy (God provides). (3) Historical evidence: Through archaeological studies, the places in the Bible and certain events were proven to be true (i.e. the exodus of Israel from Egypt, the fall of Babylon, etc). Before I go on, I would just like to say that I am not implying that one of these six reasons to believe make the belief legitimate. I'm saying ALL five reasons put together makes the belief in God legitimate (specifically the God of the Bible). (4) The light of creation tells you that intelligent design does not happen by chance. There has to be a designer. If someone was then to say "Who created God?" That will not answer the question, but will have an infinite regression of uncaused first causes. God is infinite. We can get into a bunch of arguments on this issue, but you have to admit that believing in God because of intelligent design is reasonable. (Note, By listing these five reasons, These are reasons to initialize faith, not to prove God exists--that will come in my conclusion). (5) light of conscience: There are some things in life which are relative, but that does not mean everything is relative. All humans are born and grow with a universal law that's in their hearts, which is the conscience. Paul says that the gentiles who were not presented the law of God like Israel in the Old Testament, knew the law because their conscience bore witness the to things pertaining to the law (Romans 2:15). Now that I have given reasons to believe, the only way to know for yourself whether God exists is to test His teachings and promises in His word and see what happens. You cannot deny a microbe if you have not looked into a microscope. As for the argument of testing other religions, try stacking up their initial reasons to believe compared to Christianity's before testing them. That way, you won't waste your time. God is not capricious. I won't be back until Tuesday to post again (Lord willing). |
