Science, Creation & EvolutionHelix - atheistMorality is in my opinion a side-effect of our society, and can only exist if you have a language that can describe abstract ideas. Before any animal can define what it considers 'right' and 'wrong' behaviour, it needs a language in which these concepts can be articulated (AND some way of punishing those who break the rules). In some religions the fear that god will punish them (or that they lose their place in heaven) is enough incentive to lead a moral life. In daily life we have to make sure we don't break any laws, or we will be punished by the police. The fear of repercussions will make us stop for a red traffic light, even when there is no one around. If we look at it this way, than morality, just as our law system, is a system based on fear. (A system based on REWARD instead of PUNISHMENT would be better I think, but probably not feasible) As to the question why we 'evolved' a sense of morality, I don't think natural selection necessarily favours those who lead a 'good' life over those who lead a 'bad' life, since we made these concepts up. Making choices, based on a set of rules you have been taught, has nothing to do with evolution. ------------------- |
