Science, Creation & EvolutionHelix - atheistHelix, God's child is right about freedom of faith being the cornerstone of America. This continent was settled (after the migrations of the American Indians through it) by Europeans desiring to worship apart from the state mandated religions in Europe. The Puritans, the Pilgrims, and for some time most who came after braved the new world's dangers and hardships for a chance to be free from religious persecution. The foundation of freedom of faith is historical truth. The state of Maryland itself was named by the Catholic colony there. Philadelphia was so named because it was legal to be of any faith there. Two hundred years later, after the Revolutionary War, there were no avowed atheists in leadership. The furthest anyone got from some form of Christianity was the deism of Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Paine. And they knew better than to push their religious ideas too hard, and you will see in Paine's writings that, despite his disbelief, there is a strong appeal to believers by using the terminology which would please them. |
