ArchivedThe Latter Rain of the Last Days: Now or Future? From this thread:
The Scriptural reference you have mentioned refers to the "Latter Rains" of the last days, which are also mentioned in Acts 2:17-21. Acts 2:17 [NIV] In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. First, one must put this verse into context. After the Holy Spirit caused the Apostles to begin speaking in different languages at Pentecost (verses 1-4), a crowd of Jews gathered (verses 5, 6). Some of them joked that the Apostles were drunk with wine (verse 13). Peter responded to this comment by saying that they were not drunk and it was too early to be drinking (verses 14, 15). And in verse 16, he begins to quote the words of the prophet Joel to the Jews. Now, in Acts 2:17-21 Peter quotes Joel 2:28-32. This means the context of Joel 2 establishes the context of Acts 2:17-21, otherwise Peter is quoting Scripture out of context. And Joel 2:28-32 refers to the Tribulation, as shown by the phrases "the sun will be turned to darkness," turning "the moon to blood," and showing "blood and fire and billows of smoke." In addition, the last part of Joel 2:32 that is not quoted in Acts 2:21 speaks of the remnant of Israel that will be saved at the end of the Tribulation: Joel 2:32 [NIV] [...]for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as the LORD has said, among the survivors whom the LORD calls. *The NIV and NASB use the words "among the survivors " while the KJV uses the words "in the remnant." Romans 9:27 [NIV] Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: "Though the number of the Israelites be like the sand by the sea, only the remnant will be saved. And the reason why Peter quotes Joel 2:28-32 in Acts 2:17-21 is to tell the Jews that what they saw is an example of what will happen to Israel in the future. Thus, Acts 2:17 does not apply to Christians of today. |
