ArchivedThe Latter Rain of the Last Days: Now or Future? :: Re: AineoRe: Aineo No, I agreed that both (1) the 120 believers were in the "Upper Room" and (2) all 120 believers received the "pouring out" of the Spirit (Acts 2:2). I cannot agree to the former without automatically agreeing to the latter. My original statement, which limited the "pouring out" to the 12 Apostles, was a silly mistake. However, this does not change the fact that the "pouring out" of Pentecost occurred for the sake of the Apostles and the testimony they would give. Note that there were over 500 believers living at the time (1 Corinthians 15:6), but only 120 of them gathered together in the "Upper Room" (Acts 1:15). But, Scripture only documents what happened to the 120 believers during Pentecost in Acts 2. Therefore, the assumption that what happened to the 120 believers in Acts 2 applies to all believers is an unsubstantiated assumption. Also, keep in mind that the Baptism of the Spirit was temporarily delayed for some believers, to demonstrate to the Apostles that the Samaritans (Acts 8:14-17) and the Gentiles (Acts 10:27-48) would also receive the Baptism of the Spirit (Acts 10:44-45). Nowhere within Scripture does it show the Spirit being "poured out" on other Church Age believers. The "pouring out" during the Church Age is only related to the Apostles. One must be careful to distinguish between how the 120 believers: (1) received the Baptism of the Spirit (Acts 1:5) and (2) were "filled" (Acts 2:4) or "poured out" on (Acts 2:16-17) by the Spirit. The Baptism of the Spirit is a universal baptism of spiritual change and inclusion. Specifically, the Baptism of the Spirit: a) Is only one baptism (Ephesians 4:4-6). b) Baptizes one into Christ's death (Roman 6:3-4). c) Washes one for rebirth and renewal (Titus 3:5, 2 Corinthians 5:17, 1 Corinthians 6:11). d) Adds one to the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:13). e) Begins the indwelling of the Spirit (John 14:16, John 14:26, John 15:26, 1 Corinthians 3:16, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, etc.). Nowhere does Scripture link the Baptism of the Spirit with any manifestations of the Spirit. However, the "filling" (Acts 2:4) or "pouring out" (Acts 2:16-17) of the Spirit refers to the specific manifestation(s) of the Spirit, which are variant and relative to specific situations. These things are usually used to accomplish specific goals, such as in Zechariah's prophesying (Luke 1:67), Peter's public speeches (Acts 4:8), equipping Paul for his ministry (Acts 9:17), and Paul's rebuttal to Elymas the sorcerer (Acts 13:9). Thus, in application to Acts 2, the Baptism of the Spirit spiritually changed and unified the Apostles, while the "pouring out" of the Spirit served as the Apostles' prophetic testimony to Israel. The 120 believers of Acts 2 does not equal "all mankind," even in terms of believers. Further, I have already demonstrated that Joel 2:28-32, which is quoted in Acts 2:17-21, only applies to Israel during the Tribulation. This still does not fulfill the statement of "all mankind." The group in question must be completely involved in this "pouring out," not simple salvation. Before I invest time in answering this question, what is the purpose behind this question? |
