Peace be to you all,
I cut and pasted from my orginal posting:
What Non-Muslims have said in regards to Genesis:
"All you have to do to see that the Old Testament as we know it did not come straight from the pen of its several authors, is to look at the first three chapters of Genesis. There you will find two quite distinct accounts of the creation of man. The account in the first chapter is startling different from the account in the second and third."
Geddes MacGregor, The Bible in the Making, pp. 23-24
And:
"[...] nobody has yet come up with a more satisfactory theory which explains why there are two quite different accounts of key biblical events, such as the Creation and the Flood, and why the Bible sometimes contradict itself."
Karen Armstrong, A History of God: The 4,000-Year Quest of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, p. 12.
Enough with that, the questions I ask are in regards to the scientific errors that lie in Genesis. I'll only mention 5 concerning the creation of the universe. I understand that Science should not be used to prove a word of God, but do you not agree at the same time that if a book is presumedly from God that it should not contradict Science?
(1) The Bible talks about how the Almighty God created the heavens and the Earth in 6 days and talks about an evening and morning referring to 24 hour day. Science tells us today that the universe could not have been created in 24 hour period of 6 days. I know the Quran also speaks about 6 days but it should be noted that the word used is 'AYAAM' which could mean days OR a very long period of time.
(2) V.3-5: Light was created on the first day...However we see that the cause of light was created on the 4th day (V.14-19).How could the cause of light be created on the 4th day but that light itself was created on the 1st day? A contradiction, no?
(3) V.9-13: the Bible talks about the creation of the Earth taking place on the 3rd day. How can you have a night and day without the Earth? As we all know the days and night are due to the rotation of the Earth. Hmm....
(4) V.11-13: Vegetation was created on the 3rd day when the Sun was created on the 4th day. How can vegetation come into existence without sunlight and how can they survive without sunlight?
(5) V.16-17: It states that God created 2 lights, the greater light, the sun, through the day and the lesser light, the moon, through the night. The actual meaning if you go to the Hebrew text is "lamps" so God here is indicating that the sun and Moon have light of their own for he describes them as "lamps". And if you read V.17 it says that "God set them in the dome of the sky, to shed light upon the earth" which is again pointing out that they have light of their own which is in clear contradiction to established science.
I've read of 2 replies on various sites and I'll share them with you so you don't waste your time in retelling them. One is that the Bible isn't referring to 6 days but to 6 long periods like the Qur’an. This argument is completely illogical because it clearly states and evening and morning, nevertheless, such a reply would only be solving the 6 day creation and first day light and third day Earth. The other 4 remain.
The other such argument is that it’s possible that vegetation could live for 1 day without sunlight. But if you say that, you can't also argue that the 6 days are in fact 6 long periods. You can't have your cake and eat it too! Regardless this reply would only solve number 4, the other 5 remain.
This is first question I had asked to Believer. He could not answer me... I'll be delighted to see how you go. Good luck
Whether all of them are true to the exact detail is not relevant.
Are you serious?
Now I've seen it all.
Peace and Blessings be to the Believers
