Religious Cults & False Prophets~ Discussions and DebatesOneness debateWow, you gave quite a long response. While I can most certainly address each and everyone of your arguments (as I've heard them all before), I'd rather stick to one argument at a time. Otherwise, it's too easy to just pick parts of an argument you want to refute. Where in scripture does it say God is one Person? First nowhere in the Bible does it say God is a Person (or even multiple persons). So your own argument falls even against trinitarianism. God is "Spirit" (John 4:24). But for the sake of argument, we will use your terminology (as I know full well, what you mean). BTW - the word "person" in Hebrews 1:2 literally means "substance". While nothing in scripture will literally say "God exists in one person" (or "God exists in three eternally distinct persons") we can clearly see that not only is there one God, but only One is God. For instance, In Nehemiah 9:6, "You alone are the LORD (YHWH)" ("You" is singular (this is confirmed by the word "alone"), which obviously means he is only talking to one "person", and that one "person" he is speaking to is the Lord ALONE. No one else can be Lord other than the One whom he was speaking to). If there was one or two others that make up "LORD", he would not have been able to make this statement. In otherwords, a trinitarian could not walk up to the Father and say, "You ALONE are the LORD (YHWH)" (Because the Trinitarian believes that Jesus AND the Holy Spirit (two different "persons") are ALSO the LORD (YHWH)). There are other verses that tell us the same thing... Psalm 86:10 "You ALONE are God" (Again, if God was multiple in persons he would not be able to make this statement). If more than one person makes up God, you could never speak to one of the members and say, "You ALONE are God" (as that would be in error, since two other persons are also God) Also Isaiah 37:20 You are the LORD, You ALONE. (once again "YOU (speaking to ONE) is LORD, "ALONE") Terminology no trinitarian could ever say. Psalm 83:18 "You whose name alone is the LORD" 2 Kings 19:19 " You are the LORD God, You ALONE" The Bible couldn't be more clear on the singularity of God. Trinitarians want to say the trinity doctrine is one of the essecials of Christian doctrine, Yet Jesus, when Jesus was asked what the most important commandment of all is (Mark 12:28,29) He answered and said, "Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is One...." If there was a new doctrine of God (that is so important that if you didn't believe it, you would burn in hell) wouldn't this be the PERFECT time to tell someone, when they ask you what the most important commandment is? Yet Jesus said nothing of a new doctrine of a God in three persons. He was emphatic about the Lord being ONE. God was extremely clear about one thing. He is the Lord, and He ALONE is the LORD. Isaiah 45:5,6,18 "I am the LORD, there is no other" ("I am" is singular. There is no other that is the LORD besides the ONE speaking) If God were a trinity, the Father could not make this claim, when there are two others that are the LORD with Him. The Bible is emphatically clear. There is only ONE LORD. IF you acknowledge that the Father is LORD, Jesus is LORD, and the Holy Spirit is LORD, and if you turn around and say they are 3 eternally distinct "persons" meaning one is not the other. Then Joel 2:27 is a lie. If you try to say they are ONE LORD, in three persons, then Nehemiah 9:6 is a lie. Joel 2:27 I am the LORD your God there is NO OTHER Again, "I am" is singular. No "person" within the trinity would be able to make this claim, if two others are God, along with Him. You trinitarians want to grasp on to the plural usage in passages such as Gen 1:26, as so called "proof" that God is plural, then completely ignore that same argument when you read passages such as these. The Bible can't be clearer on this issue. You see, what has happened is, you are going into reading scripture with a pre-conceived idea. You are looking at the Bible through "trinitarian goggles". That's why when you read passages such as Gen 1:26,27, you automatically think, "Oh, God must be plural!" But that's not the case. As I've stated already, the Jews have been reading the old testament for thousands of years. And never once did they come off that verse with even the slightest hint that God is in some way plural. The trinity doctrine is a man made doctrine that wasn't fully formulated until 325 AD. It's not a Biblical doctrine. It's not taught in the Old Testament, and when Jesus stepped on the scene He didn't preach a "new god" foreign to the God of the Jews. He never preached a trinity, and neither did the apostles. Like I said, the trinity (a 1700~ year old doctrine) thrives on preconceived ideas... |
