ArchivedCalling all Catholics!Aieno Wrote:
Let me try to explain it better for you Aieno. Mark 3:16; John 1:42 - Simon is renamed "Kepha" in Aramaic by Jesus which literally means "rock." This was an extraordinary thing for Jesus to do, because "rock" was not even a name in Jesus' time. Jesus did this, not to give Simon a strange name, but to identify his new status among the apostles. When God changes a person's name, he changes their status. Matt. 16:18 - Jesus said in Aramaic, you are "Kepha" and on this "Kepha" I will build my Church. In Aramaic, "kepha" means a massive stone, and "evna" means little pebble. Some non-Catholics argue that, because the Greek word for rock is "petra", that "Petros" actually means "a small rock", and therefore Jesus was attempting to diminish Peter right after blessing him by calling him a small rock. Not only is this nonsensical in the context of Jesus' blessing of Peter, Jesus was speaking Aramaic and used "Kepha, " not "evna." Using Petros to translate Kepha was done simply to reflect the masculine noun of Peter. Moreover, if the translator wanted to identify Peter as the "small rock," he would have used "lithos" which means a little pebble in Greek. Finally, Petros and petra were synonyms at the time the Gospel was written, so any attempt to distinguish the two words is inconsequential. Thus, Jesus called Peter the massive rock, not the little pebble, on which He would build the Church. Matthew 18:18"I tell you the truth, whatever you bind on earth will be[1] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be[2] loosed in heaven. Are these the verses you are quoting?because I dont see what you are implying in these verses. Aieno Wrote: Yes you are correct the first followers of Jesus were called Christians, but how did this come about? Christian’ was not originally a self-designation of the followers of Jesus, it is not surprising that it is rarely found in the New Testament." Pagan Roman authorities gave the Messiah’s followers the name ‘Christians’ but the word itself to the pagans is associated with heinous crimes and vices. The Meaning of the Name.- The Roman authorities, who first designated the disciples of Jesus as Christians, attempted thereby to characterize them as a political group or party, held together by their loyalty to the party head, Christos. By the way, Catholics are Christians. Aieno wrote: I believe the opposite. The Catholic Church appeals to the pure source, and the Baptists appeal to the contaminated source. where did you get that information from? I can come along and make a Protestant church and claim it exsisted in the 1st century too. It wouldnt be that hard, considering that two Protestant denominations are created every week! Aieno Wrote: Jesus Christ is the head of the Church, the Pope is his physical representation. We follow God through the Catholic Church. Tradition is Biblical, Sola scripture is not. "So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter." - 2 Thessalonians 2:15 Bad fruits? Look at what Protestantism has produced: Thousands of denominations, some that reject the trinity, and some that are totally non Christian. Jehova's Witnesses are bad fruits of Protestantism, they reject the Godship of Christ, they claim he was Michael the archangel. Mormons are another fruit gone totally wrong. Unitarians and oneness pentecostals both reject the trinity, are they Catholic? no, they are bad fruits of Protestantism. I am not saying Catholicism is perfect, but dont try and say Protestantism is perfect, because its far from perfect. Peace |
