ArchivedOneness, Trinity debate! The idea that the disciples are executing Jesus command by reducing Father, Son, and Holy Spirit to the name Jesus could be a possibility however, why then continue to refer to God as Father, Jesus as Son, and the Holy Spirit in the balance of the NT? We cannot be saved in the name of the Father or the Spirit. Many people have a faith in God and deny Jesus is His Son. So the more likely explanation is the disciples simply emphasized salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. God's covenant name cannot be verbalized, which is why God is referred to as Lord, Father, or a multitude of other names that describe His attributes and character. What we have recorded in Scripture are sermons, not actual baptismal services so in reality we don't know what words were actually used when converts were baptized. Jesus' command was to baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Jesus command was not to baptize in My Name, which is Jesus. Jesus exists in heaven as a distinct personality and in His human body. So when people are baptized in the name of Jesus only then God, the Father and the Holy Spirit are relegated to a lower position. God occupies a throne, Jesus is seated at His right. If you are going to use the "My Name" as the correct way to baptize then the correct name is Joshua, not Jesus since Jesus is the Greek equivalent to His Hebrew name Joshua.
