Science, Creation & EvolutionEvolution Poll :: For the Birds...For the Birds... Female birds generally care for the young and need to stay hidden. When male/female birds vary in color this is usually the case. Without the female, the young die. By males being easily spotted, this allows the female to remain hidden and the predator focus on the males. It also serves to allow weaker males to be culled from the species while the faster/smarter survive. By selection in this way, the species as a whole becomes stronger as the genes passed to the next generation are from the surviving males. This does not however mean that in bird species where there is no coloration differences that the whole species will be wiped out because the males are not colored. There are many factors which determine the survival of bird species that have little to do with coloration. |
