You people have many misconceptions about Islam. Islam is a way of life. Islam has a law and also has mechanisms to apply it into life. But, Islamic law is not as rigid as you might think. It has a proper mechanism to incorporate new developments in the life into its structure.
You should understand one thing. Islam does not break your relation with this world, it just makes a proper connection with this world and the hereafter. As orientalist Montgomery Watt put it "Islam gives a trancendental meaning to daily actions of people." Even when you have sex with your lawful spouse, you acquire credit, since you dont do it in the forbidden way.
If Islam is repressive, then every constitution, every penalty law is repressive. Every state has to make laws, and Islam sets rules and principles to do it according to God's will.
Islam offers nothing less than you need in this world, but offers more than secular laws offer: heaven in the hereafter.
One more thing is that, Islam is a phase in history of piety, but there's the Sunnetullah governing sociology of peoples. It is His greater law, like the laws governing physical realm. Islam is not utopic and acknowledges facts of Sunnetullah. For ex., when injustice arise, this may require fighting for the right cause.
