Christian/Muslim ThreadsIslamic Perspectives of The Death & Return of JesusAssalamu alaikum brother, Agreed. Hadiths are not infallible. I disaggree here. Hadith scholars did not authenticate hadith with Qur'an. I think, thats rather a novel concept. They were more interested in the strength of the chain of narrators. But in detail really. They took note of each of the narrators, they investigated their lives whether it was possible for them to see each other. They also were mobile to check whether a particular narrator has a good fame in his region. They also considered the context the hadiths were narrated. For example they checked whether the narrator uttered a hadith to get upper hand to rivals in case of hostility, by showing Prophet s.a.w. as a witness. They classified hadiths in many respects. They did not try to authenticate hadith with Qur'an. Thats because: 1) If they make sure about the strength of the hadith, that is it is word of Prophet s.a.w., trying to authenticate it with Qur'an would mean claiming authority over Prophet s.a.w. in interpreting Qur'an. 2) Prophet s.a.w. was purified, strengthened in understanding, and saved from error by God, as he was meant to be the example for all Muslims. So his interpretations might offer views on Qur'an that cannot be seen at first look. Eliminating them with our own understanding could be loss of diversity and richness of meanings. 3) As a matter of fact, when an issue arises, systematic of Islamic knowledge requires looking at the Qur'an first. Then it is supported with hadiths. If the issue is not mentioned in Qur'an, scholars look at the hadiths. There's mostly consensus on the stronger and frequently narrated hadiths. If there's not such consensus or there's no direct hadith on the issue, scholars refer to specific hadiths by making comparision between contexts of the issue and hadiths. This systematic evidently prevents preference of hadiths over Qur'an. But as you might see, when something is not mentioned in Qur'an but in a hadith, it doesnt mean that hadith contradicts Qur'an. Yes brother, hadiths are not infallible, but science of hadith and the above mentioned methodology had evolved to make most accurate use of hadiths. Equipped and sincere scholars would not make use of weak and fabricated hadiths. There's a good summary of hadith methodology here: http://www.usc.edu/dept/MSA/fundamental ... rison.html Please check if there's a mention of authentication with Qur'an. Wassalam, Unite |
