Christian/Muslim ThreadsIslamic Perspectives of The Death & Return of JesusAssalamu alaikum brother, Yes, hadith scholars perhaps had the premise that if they really securely trace the hadith back to the prophet then it would be by definition in line with Qur'an. They did a meticulous job to that effect and left behind an invaluable source of knowledge to be utilized, where hadiths were classified according to strength, frequency and in other respects. But hadeeth is a special field of expertise, hadith scholars are not necessarily scholars of Islamic law (fiqh). On the other hand, scholars of law had a pretty good knowledge of hadith and how to deal with them. And, as a matter of fact, in Islamic law Qur'an precedes all other sources of knowledge. But even when they referred to Qur'an, they were really keen on supporting that with hadiths if possible, meaning "yes, Prophet s.a.w. understood and interpreted it this way." But also, you know, not all Qur'an verses need special interpretation. Many have very visible meanings. With Arabic knowledge perhaps even more. Brother, my humble advice is that, dont specially try to be independent in reading Qur'an. You might notice in Qur'an something unnoticed before but try to ground it in sunnah. And please dont take it wrong. I'm not making this advice out of what you have written so far. You have outstanding knowledge in Arabic, and have written many strong messages. I have actually in mind the Ahmadiyya, Rashad Khalifa (the 19 gang), and some other types in Turkey. I know where so-called independent readings led these people to. I will tell something to clarify it, and perhaps you can verify. There are some people in Turkey who claim to derive from Qur'an that there are only 3 times prayer in a day. Some are university teachers in piety. Two verses are base to their claims. First verse says meaning "perform the prayers and the mid prayer." When they combine it with another verse, they say "prayers" refer to 2 prayers, and added the mid-prayer, makes 3 prayers total. To the contrary, a still-living madrasah teacher trashes them telling that in Arabic the "general plural form" (prayers) does not apply to "two items," which has a unique way of expression (dual plural). And since 3 has no way to place a mid item, then it should be 4 +1, that is there are five prayers in a day. Now, both sides know Arabic. So it differs from Arabic to Arabic. Seyyid Hussein Nasr lived among bedoins speaking pure Arabic for several years to improve his already well Arabic with original vocabulary and expressions. So brother, continue to use your Arabic and maybe there is way to go, but never lose your orientation. wassalam, Unite |
