Peace,
Lets see, aside from a few initial posts I have not posted on this board because there is too much anger and hate mostly one sided from Christians towards Muslims, in any case here it goes. I have in passing visited the site from time to time. God willing I will not regret this post.
Liberate, as far as your assertion that 95% of Muslims believe in the return of Jesus, who knows, but it is unlikely that it is quite that high. Proving this would require a scientific poll that is not that easy to do because the population is not randomly distributed. Asking for a proof refuting your assertion is equivalent to saying that there are 634000 hairs on your head, count them to prove me wrong!
Certainly, as a muslim, I, like H2O, do not believe in Jesus' return as it has no basis in the Quran except for wildly imaginative interpretations. The belief is based on various Hadith, all of it dubious as far as I am concerned, at times collaborated with wildly imaginative interpretations of the Quran in the light of the Hadith.
As successive US Presidents, this one and the one before it have amply shown, one can derive any meaning one wants from even a single word ("it depends on what the meaning of 'is' is",) Of course one would then have to abondon reason, reasonableness, and one's innate sense of truth; doing so is quite common among religious people, some groups more than others, because they by definition have such a strong urge to want to believe whatever it is that they want to believe in.
My estimate is that the number is not as high as you have guessed. I grew up in Iran and I had never even heard of the notion of Jesus' return among Muslims in Iran. Iran has a population of 70 million. I have also traveled quite extensively in the Middle East and I would say that the belief is not too common though it certainly is there. What I do agree is that among the largely western-based Muslim web sites the belief seems to be quite emphasized. Probably the authors feel that this is a way to bridge the gap to today’s Christians. It appears that it is a naive calculation.
