ArchivedA World without Religion? If we study the history of The Judeo Christian God, there are many factors which have made these religions you speak of prominent. As I mentioned before, it was who took them up and the circumstances of the day. I`m sure we can all agree that life was pretty crappy in ancient times. If you lived to be forty, you were an old man. The Dark ages, plague, mongol hordes, famine, etc. all through this period these religions survived and cemented themselves into top-heavy organizations, with more to lose than mere followers of what they preached. How much $ is the Vatican worth now I wonder? In Islamic countries especially, you would believe or die, because the government was the religion. Same for alot of Christian activities back then! Kind of makes it hard to question it there! As the population grew the indoctrination grew. eastern religions on the other hand grew considerably without killing a whole lot of people. certainly there was some bloodshed, but they mostly preach non-agression and peace, and they did alright didn`t they? Now this gets sticky. Yes it makes people happy, but why? - life here sucks so badly, they need to know there is a better place to go afterwards? -They need to be loved? If these are the reasons, then wouldn`t your religion merely be a crutch? Doesn`t that make y`all a little needy? -There`s always the "god grants you happiness" idea, but is it God, or merely going to church with a lot of nice people and feeling you belong and are a part of something? -They can`t be happy without it? If that`s the case, then maybe there is underlying psychological trauma that is keeping them down. This is where the whole Jesse Ventura "crutch" analogy comes in again. If I could take your God away from you? You don`t even have him, you might think you do and say you do, but everything you are and accomplish you have to do by yourself. I was happy when in your position, there was a time when I was content, untill the cracks started showing in these facades. Then unhappiness crept in. My whole beliefs and life were centered around something which could not be proven, ever, until the instant of my death, and I could not ignore the evidence without selling myself short. If I were to just be happy with my beliefs, and ignore the contraries, I would be nothing more than a sheep who has been caged so long I don`t even realize I can leave when the gate is left open. No thanks, I can`t be happy under those circumstances. |
