ArchivedPriests referred to as FathersWhat your article failed to show is the roots of why priests are called "father". It has to do with "religious leaders" seeking places of honor. The fact that one of the Pope's titles was originally applied to the "father" of all pagan religious beliefs is a further demonstrated of the intent of the Catholic Church's use of this term. Doctor, master, Mr., Mrs. and etc. are all forms of used in secular society and have nothing to do with the church or what Jesus taught. When the article brings up the fact that Abraham is called father it refers to the fact Abraham was the father of Isaac, the father of Israel from whom all Jews descended. Also the fact the Paul and John referred to some people as their children shows a filial or paternal love for the flock entrusted to them. Jesus told Peter to feed His sheep not father His children. So if you want a good Biblical title for your priests shepherd is more appropriate, since church leaders are in fact caring for those Scripture refers to as sheep. In a Biblical NT sense we are the children of God, not the children of the Pope or any priest. |
