I would fully agree with you, Nick, but for two things.
First, science is not a matter of opinion. To go where the data leads is the heart of true science.
Second, there are innumerable Christians who get challenged by anti-creationists on exactly such matters as when the sun was created and the length of the Genesis day.
I strongly feel that for those who want to know about such things from a scientific point of view, we ought to be here with real science. It is important that each of us builds up the body of Christ with the gifts/talents he or she has been given.
I'll do the best I can in this area.
But again, science is not necessary for faith or salvation. For many, however, it bolsters faith. That, to me, is important.
