Science, Creation & EvolutionDo I need a Science degree to read my Bible?Nick, I noticed you used the word "interpret" a couple of times. The Catholic Church "interprets" Genesis so they can make Mary the second Eve, even though the Bible does not state Mary is anything more than the mother of Jesus. Calvinists "interpret" Scripture by taking verses out of context to establish TULIP. And I can give you a plethora of examples of "interpretations" that deny God's truth. Why didn't God instruct Moses to write a detailed exposition of the creation? Well, who would have understood E=mc^2 in Moses' time? So God paraphrased what now takes volumes of technical data and words to explain what He did in 6 24-hour days because God did not give us a technical treatise on science; He gave us a record of His creation and a detailed account of His will and purpose for mankind. Do you have to accept Genesis 1-11 as literal in order to be a born-again child of God saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ? No, because Genesis 1-11 is the historical foundation of God’s will and purpose so a paraphrase of creation is sufficient to demonstrate “In the beginning God created”. On the other hand the Holy Spirit has gifted some Christians with talents and abilities to use true science to demonstrate to skeptics that Genesis 1-11 is in fact literally true. In “The Case for a Creator” Lee Strobel interviewed scientists who reject a young earth yet are devout Christians who can demonstrate our universe shows “intelligent design”, not random chance and stability from chaos by what biology, microbiology, astronomy, physics, and etc. have learned in the last 20-50 years. On the other hand there are a handful of scientists who can show the basic tenets used to prove an ancient universe are using assumptions based on defined (not researched) data. God can use both camps to accomplish His will. |
