Religious Cults & False Prophets~ Discussions and DebatesIs not this more than just personal relationship ?If it was symbolic when Jesus said "eat my flesh or drink my blood" it would not make sense, because, in Aramaic, which Jesus spoke, the symbolic meaning of "eat my flesh" is "persecute me" and "drink my blood" is "assault me". All Christianity accepted the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist until the reformation. Even Luther affirmed the doctrine (Luther's Works, St. Louis, Missouri; Concordia Publishing, 1961, volume 37, page 54). He notes that none of early church leaders ever doubted the real presence. The Didache, which is teaching of the 12 apostles (chapter 9&14); Ignatius of Antioch (110 AD, a desciple of apostle John, Justin Martyr (150 AD), Ireneus of Lyons (195 AD)( all found in William Jurgens, The Faith of the Early Fathers, Collegeville, Minn:Liturgical Press, 1970) affirmed the real presence. Not just the Roman Catholic Church, but all the old churches like the Orthodox, Coptic, Armenian churches and the Syrio-Malabar Church (which was started in India by apostle Thomas) have always believed in the real presence. |
