Aineo,
I sidestepped nothing, but merely suggested that the whole of scripture, and my own experience, supports the divinity of Christ.
I agree that the doctrine of Christ's divinity can be refuted by anyone who would like to deny it. Anyone can take scripture out of context and make it say what they want. This is especially true of something so alien to our natural experience as the triune nature of God.
He, the Creator, is greater than we, His creatures. We cannot know everything about Him. We see in scripture how the apostles themselves struggled to understand the nature of God. We see how the prophets of the Old Testament struggled likewise. We even see how Christ Himself struggled to enlighten his hearers while he walked the earth.
As for the apostles, they had no problem accepting Christ's divinity, once they fully realized Who He is, although they did continue to struggle to understand, and convey, the reality to others.
John 20 (NIV)
24Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord!"
But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it."
26A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" 27Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe."
28Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!"
29Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."
John 1 (NIV)
1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning.
3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood (or overcome) it.
Matthew 28 (NIV)
19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[a] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
Philippians 2 (NIV)
5Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
6Who, being in very nature (or in the form of) God,
did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
7but made himself nothing,
taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
and became obedient to death—
even death on a cross!
Titus 2: (NIV)
11For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. 12It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, 13while we wait for the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.
God bless,
