Science, Creation & EvolutionMorality and evolutionismI don't think you get the point I've been trying to make. I'll rephrase it again: RELIGION is not a trait that can be bred into a species. Follow a dominant individual/dominant group is such a trait. Religion flows forth from that trait. Have a look at this: To Tuppence: Nice list of things. I wish I could explain them all in a few words, but that is not possible. They are all concepts/things/urges that can be traced back to traits that have served their purpose in human evolution. I will attempt to 'retrace' their steps. Humans are (partly) predators. Our eyes are faced on the front to determine depth, which helps to calculate how far away a potential meal is. It also helps if you can PREDICT the movements of an animal. Lions coordinate their attack: A small group will drive a herd in the direction of other lions. This shows that they understand how their prey behaves; they can IMAGINE what will happen. This trait is very convenient in an evolutionary way; it means more food and a better chance of passing on your genes. Imagination is very important for animals that hunt other animals, because it allows them to 'practise' their coming strike in their head. I think our imagination sprung from the same origin as the lions capability to 'predict' their prey's reaction. I think I've answered point 7 as well. Planning for the future could be considered a specialisation of this trait. It might seem a big step from chasing animals to planning for your retirement, but our brain is the most specialised in nature. We do not use imagination for hunting nowadays; we can buy our food in the supermarket. We do however share the idea that imagination is something good; we stimulate it in children. Imagination did not 'die out' in humans, because it serves other goals now: It helps us determine wether or not we can cross a busy street for example. EDIT: Oh boy, I just saw that even more questions have been posted. I'll try to answer them later on... I will get back to you about guilt/remorse On My Way. |
