ArchivedPurgatoryImmediately after His death and before His resurrection Christ preached to those in prison does not establish an on going need for purgatory. Now who were the spirits Jesus preached to and where are they now? If you take the whole teaching in context it was those destroyed by the flood. And at the time Peter wrote this epistle these spirits were still there. What Peter does not tell us is the destiny of those spirits. Those awaiting the Messiah were made alive in the spirit when Jesus preached to them. Again this does not indicate an on-going need to be purged after death. If you take the parable of Lazarus and the bosum of Abraham as prison, then those Jesus preached to were the righteous awaiting the Messiah, not those condmened to an eternity in the lake of fire. Another possible meaning is that the Spirit of Christ was in Noah and preached the 120 years it took to construct the ark by which only eight were delivered. However, Colossians and the Hebrew verse quoted by Omega make it clear the sacrifice of Christ has purged us so that no further purging is necessary for those alive in Christ.
