Free For all - Open Discussions and DebatesI am confused :: Re: I am confusedYou don't have to take that part of Genesis literally. That would be stupid. For example, in chapter 1: verse 3 - God made light v 6 - God made heaven v 9 - God pulled land out of water v 11 - God made foliage/vegetation v 14 - lights in the heavens (sun/moon/stars) v 20 - living creatures in the water v 24 - living creatures on land v 26 - man The way I was taught, there is parallel construction in this literary form, first recognized by some saint way back long ago that works like this: v 6 - God made light v 14 - God made lights in heaven v 9 - God made firmament amid the waters v 20 - water creatures v 11 - God made plants v 24 - land creatures v 26 - God made man Could the info be literally true? It's possible. I don't know anyone who was there. Does Genesis support a young earth theory or an old earth theory? Both. It depends on your interpretation. It doesn't make Genesis untrue. Now Exodus is a book that's meant to be taken literally. Could the Tower of Babel have happened as stated? I think so. Could the great flood have happened as stated? I think so. You'd have to take it as truth that no rain occurred prior to the flood and that the earth possessed a vapor barrier that created a mist/dew every morning and probably was warm like the tropics with a steamy atmosphere. The destruction of the barrier would be followed by rain and an extreme climate change that could explain the Ice Age and the extinction of the dinosaurs. Is it necessary to see Genesis as literal truth to be a Christian? The Bible says that if you believe on Jesus Christ, then you'll be saved from ultimate destruction. If you could take that part as literal truth and live with Christ, then it wouldn't matter whether or not you took Genesis literally or factually as long as you took it as the Word of the Lord... but from your posts at the end of the thread, it looks like you have problems with that too. Questioning is great. God can handle questions. But what is your core question, really? Something about Genesis, or "Does God exist"? |
