Josephus claims 1.1 million Jews were killed and 97,000 enslaved in the war and siege (Wars, VI, ix, 3). According to the above quote Titus did erect an idol on the alter. I never said Pompey sacrificed anything. I did however say that, 1 Maccabees records how Antiochus Epiphanes dedicated the temple to Zeus, and over the alter was placed a statue of Zeus. And that a pig was sacrificed on the alter. Daniels actual prophesy covers roughly 1,150 days not 1290 days. Antiochus Epiphanes desecrated the temple and halted sacrifices in 167 B.C. Antiochus's actions partially fulfilled this prophecy. C.H. Spurgeon wrote: (1888) "This portion of our Saviour's words appears to relate solely to the destruction of Jerusalem. As soon as Christ's disciples saw "the abomination of desolation," that is, the Roman ensigns, with their idolatries, "stand in the holy place," they knew that the time for their escape had arrived; and they did flee to the mountains." (Matthew: The Gospel of the Kingdom. . p. 215). Augustine wrote: (379) "Luke to show that the abomination spoken of by Daniel will take place when Jerusalem is captured, recalls these words of the Lord in the same context: When you shall see Jerusalem compassed about with an army, then know that the desolation thereof is at hand (xxi. 20). For Luke very clearly bears witness that the prophecy of Daniel was fulfilled when Jerusalem was overthrown." (vol. 6, p. 170) The Romans planted their eagles on the shapeless ruins, over against the eastern gate, offered their sacrifices to them, and proclaimed Titus Imperator with the greatest acclamations of joy. Thus was fulfilled the prophecy concerning the abomination of desolation standing in the holy place." Philip Schaff, vol. 1 pp. 397-398. Albert Barnes wrote: (1949) "The abomination of desolation means the Roman army, and is so explained by Lu, xxi. 20. The Roman army is further called the abomination on account of the images of the emperor, and the eagles, carried in front of the legions, and regarded by the Romans with divine honours" (Matthew p. 254) The event foretold by Jesus happened when Roman standards, that were worshipped by Roman soldiers went into the holy city, just before the destruction of the temple. Titus brought armies and completely destroyed Jerusalem and the temple and left it utterly desolate, just as Jesus had prophesied. |
