Ezekiel wrote: You see tuppence, the traditional belief in an immortal soul that goes to heaven upon death is an invention of the early church councils. In his Dialogue With Trypho, Justyn Martyr wrote, "If you meet some who say that their souls go to Heaven when they die, do not believe that they are Christians!". In his Apologies Justin Martyr compares what he terms the heretical concept of an immortal soul with Greek mythology where mortals became immortal. Irenaeus wrote: Some who are reckoned among the orthodox go beyond the prearranged plan for the exaltation of the just, and are ignorant of the methods by which they are disciplined beforehand for incorruption. They thus entertain heretical opinions. For the heretics, not admitting the salvation of their flesh, affirm that immediately upon their death they shall pass above the heavens. Those persons, therefore, who reject a resurrection affecting the whole man, and do their best to remove it from the Christian scheme, know nothing as to the plan of resurrection. The above are just a sampling of what 2nd century Christians wrote concerning the resurrection of the dead. It was not until Neoplatonism was used by 3rd century ECF's to interpret the Hebrew and Greek Scriptures that the concept of an immortal soul that goes to heaven upon death became a part of Christian dogma. |
