Sickle cells are resistant to the parasite known which causes Malaria, anyone without an allele coding for sickle cells will die at a very early age due due to the infection. Sickle-cell is lethal when you are homozygous for it, eg both alleles code for sickle cells. However if you are heterozygous, 1 sickle allele one non sickle, it gives you a much higher chance at surviving Malaria. As for a recent beneficial mutation, the SARS virus is an example of one. This virus was previously only capable of ifecting birds (I think), a mutation occured that allowed it to infect a new host (us) and were it not for quarantine efforts the mutation would have been very beneficial to the virus. |
