My experience is anecdotal not parochial. As to survey's and statistics, they can be stacked and twisted. 57% of those who responded to a survey does not mean much if the vast majority did not respond. I know to many cases where people (gay, straight, and ethnic minorities) have been "discriminated against" only in their minds. This is not to say that discrimination does not exist; it does. However, legislation will not end all discrimination; education will. Lets face it, even ancient Greece discriminated against overt passive homosexuals by revoking their citizenship.
As to where I live, I currently live in a small city in Colorado where I came out and my lesbian niece and her partner of 10+ years live an open lesbian life and suffer no discrimination. The only discrimination I have dealt with is as an ex-gay man and that only from "Christians" and rabid gay activists who refuse to give me the same respect they demand for themselves. Well, with one exception. I was attacked by a young man who I later saw turning tricks in a gay bar. He attacked me as an outlet and preamble to coming out. I have seen more discrimination in the gay community aimed at other gays than I have seen from society in general. I have lived in major cities, Colorado Springs, Omaha, Houston, and have visited San Francisco often before my brother died from AIDS. I was employed by a major retail corporation for 5 years and worked in small towns in three states where gays suffered discrimination only when they made an issue of their sexuality in lieu of just living their lives.
People fear what they don't understand.
