ArchivedGospels vs. Letters/Acts/Revelationsantoineg wrote:Aineo wrote:Also since you find the gospels of greater import than the balance of the NT, just how do you handle this? Matt 5:17-20
17 "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill. 18 "For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass away from the Law, until all is accomplished. 19 "Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and so teaches others, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 "For I say to you, that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven. NAS
Heaven and earth have not passed away and all is not accomplished, so do you believe we should be keeping the Law?
I think it's interesting that the verse you just quoted comes from the Sermon on the Mount. Your interpretation (that Jesus was advocating, among other things, that homosexuality is an abomination, based on Leviticus) flies in the face of the general feeling one gets from the first part of the Sermon.
"Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
7Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called sons of God.
10Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
No where does it say "I hate sinners" or "yes, Leviticus, in all its particulars, was exactly correct." Nor does he even specifically refer to the specific laws of the Old Testament. That last one just occured to me.
Jesus is love. What you are advocating -- that God hates those who engage in loving, albeit homosexual, intimacy -- is just wrong. Again, IMHO.
"Blessed are the poor in spirit
for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven". What does this mean? Since I am from Colorado and had an uncle who owned cattle ranches I always think of his horses when I read this verse. A gentle horse is "poor in spirit", humble, follows his master. On the other hand a horse who is not poor in spirit is wild, a great bucker in rodeos, arrogant, and defies his master. So the poor in spirit are the humble or maybe a better way to say this is: 1 Peter 5:4-5
5 You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble. NAS
And with just a little effort you will find that the Sermon on the Mount is a great summary of other concepts that are fully explained in the balance of the NT.
You like others are adding words to what I say. Jesus is love. What you are advocating -- that God hates those who engage in loving, albeit homosexual, intimacy -- is just wrong. Again, IMHO.
I have never stated God hates homosexuals, I have said He hates homosexuality and will judge those who refuse to accept His definition of right and wrong and this includes those who engage in adultery, lying, and a lot of other activities under mans control.
BTW, you are side-stepping my question about what Jesus said about the law.
