Psalms 137
By the rivers of Babylon,There we sat down and wept,When we remembered Zion. 2 Upon the willows in the midst of it We hung our harps. 3 For there our captors demanded of us songs,And our tormentors mirth, saying, "Sing us one of the songs of Zion."
4 How can we sing the Lord's song In a foreign land? 5 If I forget you, O Jerusalem,May my right hand forget her skill. 6 May my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth,If I do not remember you,If I do not exalt Jerusalem Above my chief joy.
7 Remember, O LORD, against the sons of Edom The day of Jerusalem,Who said, "Raze it, raze it,To its very foundation." 8 O daughter of Babylon, you devastated one,How blessed will be the one who repays you With the recompense with which you have repaid us. 9 How blessed will be the one who seizes and dashes your little ones Against the rock. NAS
biochemrex, I presume you are taking vs. 9 to show that God approves of abortion, which is a false interpretation arrived by taking one verse out of context of the Psalm and OT prophecies concerning the enemies of Jerusalem.
Jeremiah 1:4-5
4 Now the word of the LORD came to me saying,
5 "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
And before you were born I consecrated you;
I have appointed you a prophet to the nations."
NAS
Abortion advocates claim this is taken out of context by appealing to:
Exodus 21:22-25
22 "And if men struggle with each other and strike a woman with child so that she has a miscarriage, yet there is no further injury, he shall surely be fined as the woman's husband may demand of him; and he shall pay as the judges decide. 23 But if there is any further injury, then you shall appoint as a penalty life for life, 24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.
NAS
By quoting Exodus abortion advocates ignore the balance of the law since a man who accidently kills another man is not guilty of murder.
Exodus 21:12-14
12 "He who strikes a man so that he dies shall surely be put to death. 13 But if he did not lie in wait for him, but God let him fall into his hand, then I will appoint you a place to which he may flee. 14 If, however, a man acts presumptuously toward his neighbor, so as to kill him craftily, you are to take him even from My altar, that he may die.
NAS
Also abortion advocates ignore that in Exodus 21:22-25 a miscarriage resulting from an
accidental injury requires
reparation to the family (the husband is the head of the family) as set forth by the judges. Also abortions can cause additional injuries to a woman including severe emotional trauma, inability to carry subsequent pregancies to full term, sterility, and etc.
