The weirdness of the abortion debate is that the Atheists accept a Christian Scriptural view while the Christians argue from Buddhist doctrine.
The Jews believe that a human person does not exist until a baby is borne. There is no teaching against abortion in the Bible which endorses it against enemies. Psalm 137 teaches that it is good to kill the babies of enemies.
Jesus says he does not deny Jewish law and has no qualification on this subject. Of the early Church fathers, the most influential St Aquinas taught that human life - ensoulment, took place at 60 days, not at conception.
However Buddhist doctrine has always maintained that life begins at conception and to procure an abortion or even practice birth control is a non virtuous act of the most serious kind,(a mortal sin).
However over the years Christian values have come under Buddhist and Pagan influence while Christians have cast aside traditional Christian beliefs and values. Keith
