Revelation 3:12-13
12'He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he will not go out from it anymore; and I will write upon him the name of My God, and the name of the city of My God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God, and My new name. 13'He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.' NAS
The name “Jesus” is not a translation of any Greek or Hebrew word, the name “Jesus” is the transliteration of the Greek “Iesous”.
I remember reading decades ago that to avoid confusion when reading Scripture the decision was made to use “Jesus” when the context of the NT referred to the Christ. The reason becomes apparent when we compare Act 7:45 and Hebrews 4:8 in the KJV and modern translations:
Acts 7:45
45 "And having received it in their turn, our fathers brought it in with Joshua upon dispossessing the nations whom God drove out before our fathers, until the time of David. NAS
Acts 7:45
45 Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus (Greek Iesous) into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David; KJV
Hebrews 4:8
8 For if Joshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that.
NAS
Hebrews 4:8
8 For if Jesus (Greek Iesus) had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. KJV
hisway wrote:What did Jesus mean when He said, "I come in My Father's name?"
When the ambassador of one country travels to another country the ambassador “comes in the” NAME of the country he represents. Jesus represented God as both prophet and Son and is both fully man and fully God. So His use of the phrase “in the name of” can be compared to the OT prophets who spoke in the name of and with the authority of God.
We can “wrangle” over words until the Lord comes again however the truth of Scripture is that God has manifested Himself to us as God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit all of whom have identical attributes.
