Not too long ago in human history (primarily in Europe, I think), when plants were both known and thought (sometimes erroneously) to have healing properties for various ailments, the idea was put forth that the appearance of the plant would indicate what part of the body it could heal. And sometimes the plants were named after the part of the body they were supposed to heal. Thus rather unlovely names like 'liverwort' and such. |
