ArchivedBullied gay students awarded $1.1 millionI do not live in the south but I do live in Hayward, and that is why the killing had such an impact on me. The reason I brought it up was so that LindaBee might think twice avout gays having protection in the exact school (district) she had mentioned in her post. I realize there are many crimes done by straight and gay people. Let's be honest about harassment in school, at least in California. People are not teased anymore because of race as least not much in the Bay Area. I do know, as I have a 12 year old daughter that overweight teens/kids are persecuted just as much as homosexuals. When I mean persecuted they are teased constantly. They are not subjected to physical attacks like gay students, especially male gay students. Somehow young straight boys feel threatened by their gay conterparts. I do believe this is changing, as I have asked my daughter what things are like at her middle shcool. Now that gay people are more accepted and more visibible on televisioin and in the media etc... Less and less teasing is happening. Whether you think being gay or acting out your gay desires is sinful or not, no one should be subjected to redicule. |
