The individual may well have written the article, however none of the information in the article or the basic thesis of the article are new.
How would I handle this? Agree that until God revealed His name to Moses that all gods, pagan and the one true God were referred to as "el" and its derivatives. Mesopotamia is referred to as the "cradle of civilization" and it would be expected that all false religions evolved from that region as would all terminology used to refer to their false gods as well as the one true God until God revealed His name to Moses. I would also point out that all Semitic languages have a common root so therefore apealling to linguistics is begging the question.
“…El is the oldest known name for the deity; it was used in varying forms by almost all Semitic peoples as a proper name for God. The Canaanites are known to have worshipped a god whose name was linked with various local sanctuaries (e.g., El-bethel).
I would also point out that "el" is a generic title not a name. Baal, Astoreth, Isis, Osiris, Horus, and etc. were all "el" but not "El" since all these gods were limited in their abilities as the author points out in this section of the article:
“Elohim, the plural of the Hebrew word eloha, “god,” a lengthened form of the Canaanite word el (Aramaic alaha; Arabic ilah) , most frequently used for the God of Israel in the Old Testament. A plural of majesty, the term Elohim – though sometimes used for other deities, such as the Moabite god Chemosh, for the Sidonian goddess Astarte, and also for other majestic beings such as angels, kings, judges (the Old Testament shofetim), and the Messiah – is usually employed in the Old testament for the one and only God…
The concept of capitolizing the first letter of names was not used in ancient languages.
I would also put Hosea 2:16 in context.
Hosea 1:1-2
1:1 The word of the LORD which came to Hosea the son of Beeri, during the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and during the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.
2 When the LORD first spoke through Hosea, the LORD said to Hosea, "Go, take to yourself a wife of harlotry, and have children of harlotry; for the land commits flagrant harlotry, forsaking the LORD."
NAS
Hosea 2:16 does not tell us the Yaweh and Baal are the same, this verse tells us that Yaweh through Hosea was telling Judah and Israel that the day was coming when they would reject their false god Baal and return to the one true God.
Now back to Joseph Campbell, in order to read what Cambell taught you have to buy his books, watch videos of his seminars, or join the foundation named for him. Campbell remains a primary source for those who see all religions as mythology. Campbell is just one of those "western authorities" who reject all institutionalized religions as mythology who do not agree with the "western authorities" that defend their own faith be it Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and etc.
