ArchivedBenny Hinn! It's strange that even as a pentecostal in the classical mode who has some respect for the late Kenneth Hagin, Sr. I find myself both agreeing with some of the sentiment of the above statement and yet still alarmed at its tone. I would like to begin by critiqueing the statement about Bonnke claiming to have raised the dead. I am familiar with the Rev. Bonnke's story as it was told in great detail in a segment on the 700 Club. I would just like to say that the Lord can raise the dead if He so chooses. Everyone fundamental in faith believes this and we all look forward to the ressurection of our bodies in their newfound glory at the return of our Lord. The Rev. Bonnke did not raise that man from the dead, the Lord did. Indeed, Bonnke did not even know that the deceased had been brought into the building. It may be argued that in a third world country, death may have been misdiagnosed, but since the man had been embalmed and was in fact in his coffin, I am willing to believe that the Lord is more than able to perform this miracle. Without even "breaking a sweat." None of us can say whether or not Dr. Duplantis was taken to heaven. He will answer to his Lord if he is lying. I have not found anything heretical in his vision, but I will admit that I am not as familiar with it as I am with Bonnke's ressurection story. As for praying for the nations, who among us would not do well to emulate the Rev. Hinn in that regard. Prayer played a major role in uprooting the evil communist system that had choked Russia and eastern Europe for too long. I get the feeling that you are uncomfortable with the language of "speaking to the nations." Indeed as someone from a baptistic background before joining the Assemblies of God, I have been in some meetings where the language seemed odd to me, too. Ezekiel was asked to speak to the dry bones, and we believe that we must speak when we are converted [Rm. ch. 10]. I think we can cut people from different traditions from ours a little slack in the manner in which they pray. I am not now comfortable with all my charismatic and pentecostal brethren, but they are still my brethren in the Lord. And everyone who is genuinely born-again is my brother or sister in-the-Lord, and whether I agree with them on every point or not, they're still "family." I agree that we should watch out for heresy, but I also believe that we should endeavor to maintain the unity of the body and to avoid speaking evil of Another's servants. Are they con-men? Perhaps, but everyone who gives as to the Lord will in no way suffer loss! Do I support these ministries? I have never been so led. Do I have any of their books or other products? No. And I say that even in the memory of living in an area that had Catholic television as well as TBN. My memory is of turning the channel from my charismatic brethren at times in embarrassment and turning to Mother Angelica Live! ' I admit it's pretty bad when a pentecostal finds the Catholics to be more acceptable at times than the radical faith people. Of course, there were times when I had to leave the Catholics, too, since there are clear heresies in their views on some things, so I thank God for the Weather Channel. Please understand that I am not being contentious. |
