ArchivedIs Myrrh the Bible what we call Marijuana today? Not always. I occasionally use "strong drink" to replace sleeping pills when I need to counter the sleeplessness caused by my meds, which my doctor okayed. One ounce of gin does less physical harm than the chemicals in sleeping pills. And the moderate use of alcohol is still prescribed for elderly people with heart problems. The alcohol helps burn up the impurities in veins and arteries. Not every person who has a cocktail after work is out to get drunk. Also you are ignoring the last clause: “and there you shall eat in the presence of the LORD your God and rejoice, you and your household". In view of what the Bible has to say about getting drunk and dissipation I think you are simply ignoring the obvious and the obvious is that God wanted His people to enjoy a celebration and if they wanted to use “strong drink” that was okay. This is not a license to get drunk on a daily basis. Wine has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries so Paul advising Timothy to take a little wine for his stomach is not “divine knowledge” but was common practice in the ancient world. I am well aware of the medicinal benefits of marijuana as well as its historical use in folk medicine. My youngest brother was on medical marijuana to counter the nausea of chemotherapy. It came in pill form and was prescribed by his doctor. THC is the active ingredient in marijuana that is medically beneficial and can also be used to increase appetite for HIV/AIDS patients since some of the meds cause lack of appetite resulting in weight loss and other complications. As to the Bible not mentioning marijuana or prohibiting smoking it that is ludicrous. The Bible does not specifically prohibit the use of opium, morphine, angels dust, and etc. However, the Bible does prohibit witchcraft and sorcery. The Greek word is “pharmakeia” from which we get the words “pharmacy” and “pharmaceutical”. Hallucinogenics were used in idol worship and by pagan seers, which was another use of marijuana by ancient cultures. |
