ArchivedSOME CONTRADICTIONS IN THE BIBLE :: Re: SOME CONTRADICTIONS IN THE BIBLEWhen the priests and Levites ask John if he is Elijah, John says he is not Elijah in the way that the Jews think. It has been estimated that in the century previous to the Crucifixion no fewer than 200,000 Jews lost their lives in futile rebellions trying to usher in a conquering Messiah. Jesus did not advocate violence but gave himself a ransom for many. Jesus is talking about the Great Tribulation and the two witnesses that will preach, having the power of God to perform miracles similar to those of Moses and Elijah (Rev.11:6). Jesus is not saying that John is the person Elijah (v.12), He is noting the similarity between Elijah's future ministry and that of John the Baptist in revealing Him (Jesus, i.e. the Messiah) to the nation. (V.11) confirms that the person Elijah's ministry is still futrue. The nature of John the Baptist was full of fire, i.e., a second Elijah (in spirit only). |
