It is clear that he refused to be called Son of God. He refused again in Luke 9:20 and 21, and charged them too.
"He (Jesus) said unto them (the disciples), But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God. And he straightly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing."
Does your Bible say something different?
The point you are missing is that Jesus didn't want the truth that He was the Son of God published abroad because as Luke 9:22 states
The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain and be raised the third day.
Jesus' resurrection would be proof of the truth of who He is.
