Science, Creation & EvolutionIs Science Evil?
I assume you mean 'given to us by god.' I don't think this is the case. We can control a lot of nature, but I don't see any indication that this is the 'role' that we should fulfill. From a very objective point of view, even mass-extinctions have their upside: Animals that were confined to small 'niches' in nature can blossom. This is -as evolutionary theories go- what happened to mammals when the dinosaurs died out 65 million years ago. I don't think there is a 'rape gene.' Rape is a decision (fueled by instincts) that is made in a certain situation. There is a strong indication that rape IS something sexual: It can occur when an opportunity for sex arrives but is denied and it can also be the result of built up feelings of rejection (from women). Robert Wright writes about rapers and points out that the decision to rape is in most cases related to low self-esteem. He even goes as far as saying that raping is in essence a desperate attempt to reproduce. We see that sexual repression leads to violence, but if we look at bonobos - chimpanzee-like apes- we see that a society that promotes sexual freedom is far less violent. They are know (infamous!) for their sexual behaviour (both homosexual and heterosexual), but they are also the least violent of all the monkeys and apes (inlcuding mankind). I think we have an inborn feeling of 'right and wrong' and not of good and evil. They might seem to be the same things, but I don't think they are. Good and evil refers to personal traits. Right and wrong is more general. Throughout our lives we have to make decisions: Do I stay in bed (as my body 'tells' me) or do I get up and go to college (because it will be in my best interest on the long run). I would say that 'right and wrong' is closely related to our decision-making abilities. We wonder 'what is the right decision? Staying in bed or getting up?' I think that the decision that is in our (genes') best interest is the one we label as 'right.' If we are ill 'right' means staying in bed, but if you value education (and the money we pay for it) the 'right' decision is getting up. (Of course there are several other things that influence our decisions, but I would say that the idea of right and wrong is related to decision making.) |
