Mister Emu wrote:I think one of the problems is that there were not in the whole city of Sodom 10 Godly people, there weren't even 5, but 4, Lot his wife and his two sons.
First of all the Bible uses the term "righteous" not Godly and second Lot had 2 daughters (not 2 sons) who survived the destruction of Sodom and they were far from righteous as they later seduced their own father. You are also ignoring the fact Lot's wife was also unrighteous in that she disobeyed God's instructions not to look back.
Regardless of what people want to believe about the destruction of Sodom and the other cities God is clear as to why those cities were destroyed:
Ezekiel 16:49-50
49 "Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had arrogance, abundant food, and careless ease, but she did not help the poor and needy. 50 "Thus they were haughty and committed abominations before Me. Therefore I removed them when I saw it. NAS
The abdominal acts of the people of those cities was the result of arrogance, abundant food, careless ease, and not helping the poor and needy”.
How is Sodom used in other parts of the Bible?
Isaiah 1:1
1:1 The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, concerning Judah and Jerusalem which he saw during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.
NAS
Isaiah 1:9-10
9 Unless the LORD of hosts
Had left us a few survivors,
We would be like Sodom,
We would be like Gomorrah.
10 Hear the word of the LORD,
You rulers of Sodom;
Give ear to the instruction of our God,
You people of Gomorrah.
NAS
Jeremiah 23:14
14 "Also among the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen a horrible thing:
The committing of adultery and walking in falsehood;
And they strengthen the hands of evildoers,
So that no one has turned back from his wickedness.
All of them have become to Me like Sodom,
And her inhabitants like Gomorrah.
NAS
These are just a few examples. God through His prophets compares the Jews to Sodom. Does God view other sins as greater than the sins of Sodom?
Lamentations 4:6
6 For the iniquity of the daughter of my people
Is greater than the sin of Sodom,
Which was overthrown as in a moment,
And no hands were turned toward her. NAS
Matthew 10:5-15
5 These twelve Jesus sent out after instructing them, saying, "Do not go in the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter any city of the Samaritans; 6 but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 "And as you go, preach, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.' 8 "Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons; freely you received, freely give. 9 "Do not acquire gold, or silver, or copper for your money belts, 10 or a bag for your journey, or even two tunics, or sandals, or a staff; for the worker is worthy of his support. 11 "And into whatever city or village you enter, inquire who is worthy in it; and abide there until you go away. 12 "And as you enter the house, give it your greeting. 13 "And if the house is worthy, let your greeting of peace come upon it; but if it is not worthy, let your greeting of peace return to you. 14 "And whoever does not receive you, nor heed your words, as you go out of that house or that city, shake off the dust of your feet. 15 "Truly I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment, than for that city.
NAS
Ask yourself how you treat the poor and the needy in your town; ask yourself how your church deals with the homeless and the poor. Other than the Christmas season are you and your church visible in helping those in need?
The destruction of the cities of the plain teach a greater lesson than that sexual immorality is an abomination to God.
