ArchivedOffer the other cheek?Hello 1+1+1=1? my friend! You asked a very difficult BUT good question. But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. Matthew 5:39 In Exodus 21:24 it says:eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth as a way of ending feuds. Jesus is clearly saying this method is not a right or license for vengeance. What He is trying to address is that we should resist not evil . Evil is seen here, not as a state, but rather as the actions of evil ones or the malicious ones. It represents the evil and sinful element in which man provokes him to an evil act. Jesus is showing how believers should respond to a personal injury or attack. He is not discussing the governments obligation to maintain law and order. Furthermore those passages do not mean that a man should not defend his family or his country, but rather that he should not attempt personal vengeance, eben through the means of the law, to make up for a personal injury. Jesus gives examples of this of how the believer should react to unfair or unreasonable treatment. In retaliation to physical violence, he is to turn ti him the other cheek also. Mans natural action would be to attack back at his opponent or adversary, but he is not to be a natural man. He must overcome evil with good. And should the USA forgive those involved in the attacks on 911? In all honesty my friend, i can only say that God has put the governments in authority, but as to whether or not they should forgive those involved in the attack, i believe that only God is able to judge the actions of those whom He has put in authority. If it is God that put the government in authority and not the Wicked One who is the ruler of the system of all things. Th greatest example of that is JESUS, when He overcame those who were evil with good. I hope this helps a little. God Bless my friend. |
