House of Representatives Approves Pro-Life Unborn Victims of Violence Act
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday voted in favor of the Unborn Victims of Violence Act for the third time. Now, attention shifts to the Senate, which has never voted on the bill, that allows criminals to be charged with two crimes when they attack a pregnant woman and kill or injure her unborn child. The House voted in favor of the bill by a bipartisan 254-163 vote after turning back an alternative proposal by pro-abortion Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) 229-186. A spokesperson for Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) told LifeNews.com that the unborn victims bill will definitely get a vote in the Senate "in the coming weeks" but had no specific timetable as to when. Members differed over the premise of the bill that defines an unborn child as a person under criminal law, in order to allow criminals to be prosecuted. Congresswoman Melissa Hart (R-PA), the sponsor of the legislation, said, "A woman who makes that decision to have a child has that decision taken away from her in a violent act" deserves to be protected.
