ArchivedIs there evidence in the Quran that Jesus died?peace to everyone I've been looking at surah 5:116-117 which discusses amongst other things, God taking Jesus back to Himself. Now, the verb used is "tawaffa" which means to literally "to take back" or "to collect" (as in a debt). I understand this is the same usage of it as in Sura 4:97, 6:60-61, 39:42, whre God calls back to Himself, the souls of people, whilst they sleep = keeps those whose death he has decreed and sends back the others until the day when he finally calls them to himself. Jesus here then in Surah 5:116-117 is using perfectly natural terminology relating to His coming death. I have seen "tawaffa" also translated as "when you terminated my life on this earth". in one translation. So, is it possible that perhaps the understanding that is commonly held, that "God raised Jesus up to Himself" is not consistent with the common usage of the verb throughout the Quran, which is relation to termination of life, of God receiving souls back to Himself.. in other words relating to someone's death? Sura 4:157-159 raises many questions. The traditional understanding is that God raised Jesus to Himself either off of the cross, or substituted him with someone in his likeness. whatever is understood.. Jesus did not die. and God raised Jesus to Himself. Now the verb used here I'm told is "rafa"a which means to "lift up" and would refer to God raising Jesus from the dead as well as raising him to heaven. This text relates to other texts used of martyrs who die in the cause of Islam and are raised to God as a promise. God honoured Jesus by lifting him up to heaven, just as God will honour the martyrs by bringing their souls to Himself. I know that this is only a possible interpretation, but if you read this in conjunction with Sura 3:55 the word "tawuffa" can be interpreted in it's common usage... even here. Does the Qur'an really deny the possibility that the Prophet who is now more at the throne of God and who will oneday come again to judge the living and the dead.. actually did die, raise again to heaven ( and therefore is as He claimed to be ...GOD?) |
