When the order was founded they numbered only eleven strong and were given quarters in the palace in Jerusalem. For the next 9 years all the templars did was dig under the ruins of the temple of Solomon and then they went to Europe to recruit and amass wealth. The Templars quickly became a powerful and extremely rich organization despite there vows of poverty. Because of there wealth they began to allow people to deposit money with them and then withdraw it later in other parts of the world and some of there practices(in addition to those of the Waldensian heresy) formed the basis of modern banking possibly including the idea of a check. Ultimately it was this very wealth that brought them to ruin. King Phillip IV of France grew jealous of the power of the Templars and beyond that felt snubbed when they rejected his request for membership. As such he set in motion a chain of events that lead to the persecution of the templars as heretics. While in some countries notably France among others the Templars were all but wiped out in other places like Germany and Spain the order continued to exist some times changing its name. One of these surviving groups renamed itself the Knights of Christ which fits into another interesting riddle.
