Science, Creation & EvolutionWhy are cats carnivores? :: Pick and choose...Pick and choose... How big an ark one may ask? How about this: Genesis 6:15 This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be 450 feet long, 75 feet wide and 45 feet high. God did not say “bring 2 representatives of each animal on the ark so that they may later evolve” According to the bible (the uber source for all information on god I hear), god told Noah to bring two of each animal to the ark. Is it not written somewhere in the bible about god creating each creature after its own fashion, somewhere near the beginning perhaps? Now given that this is correct, would that not mean that tigers begat tigers, housecats begat housecats, etc. and etc.? No allowance for speciation on god’s part. Now we run into a problem: a lot of animals, very little space. Perhaps god did allow Noah to bring only 2 representatives of each general animal type. Let us say a medium sized cat was chosen, say an African Caracal (Felis caracal). Post flood the African Caracal would need to evolve not just within a species to get your Domestic Cat (Felis catus), it would also have had to evolve between Genus to get the Tiger (Panthera tigris) and Snow Leopard (Uncia uncia) and any number of other cats. However, given the vast amount of animals that are unrelated and rather unique beyond the Genus level, the ark is still too small (unless you would be willing to concede evolution within Family, or how about Order?) Note: This does not even mention the number of plants that needed to be on the ark. How many plants seeds can survive total immersion in water for the duration of the flood and still germinate? Your guess is as good as mine. So what is really going on here? Glad you asked… Back in the day (Noah’s day) the world was much smaller than it is today. Or rather, people’s knowledge of it was anyway. There was no North/South America, Arctic, Antarctic, Australia, Malaysia, Southern Africa and etc. Very few people traveled further than a few miles from their home. No newspapers, no phone, no computer, no telegraphs etc. The number of known animals was also limited to those they came in contact with, or some traveling merchant told them about. Given the size of the known world and the limited number of known animals, then it was reasonable to have fit them all inside the ark described in the bible. Now fast forward 5,000 years. Bigger world, lots more animals, and the once adequate ark is not so adequate any longer. What to do? Well, the choices are limited: 1. Admit the obvious – the bible is wrong. 2. Ague that god made the interior of the ark MUCH larger than its exterior. 3. Adjust what the bible/god said to try and fit the representatives of each animal inside and allow for some limited form of evolution No. 1 obviously is unacceptable. No.2 is not mentioned and offends one’s sense of reality. Besides, a miracle of that nature would have surely been mentioned by Noah or his descendants but was not. That leaves No. 3 adjust what the bible/god said, allow for solid scientific knowledge only so far as it supports our (adjusted) view of the bible. The problem is this: if one part can be adjusted, then any part can be adjusted. If one part is wrong and needs fixed, then any part can be wrong. “There is also no question but that one pair of cats of probably a medium size was on Noah's Ark. Thus, any mutation affecting that one pair would affect all cats after them.” Please keep arguing against evolution, you are my best ally. |
