There is little doubt that microevolution occurs. But, as someone has previously pointed out, the fact is that new species are not spawned from the parent species. Such is a genetic improbability.
There is a lot to be said for the existence of a Designer of the universe. Christians say it is God/Jesus. Other religions say it is their particular deity. The fact that so many independent religions have told stories of their Creator/Designer from the time before Jesus of Nazareth is a pretty telling statement about the existence of a Designer.
I'm all for teaching ID in schools, but not as a part of science. Teach it as a philosophy course and include the major religious creation stories (including Native American, Norse, Greek, Roman, Christian, and Hindu). As a matter of fact, I would enjoy teaching this course.
