Science, Creation & EvolutionC.S. Lewis and naturalismNo, I stub my toe and my brain by the use of my thoughts (intellect) tells me I hurt my toe. I put my finger in a fire my body reacts without my making an intellectual decision to jerk my finger out of the fire. I can make a decision to hold my breath until I pass out; that is the use of intellect. After I pass out my "brain" (without my thinking about it) takes back control and I start breathing again. The "instinctual" reactions we think are because of our brain are in fact not controlled by our brain, but by a lump of ganglia positioned below our brain. Our "instinctual" responses are the result of chemical messages transmitted by neural receptors connected to other neural receptors that control our muscles. So the jerk to avoid pain response never goes through our brain. However, there is a further consequence of putting your finger in a fire, and that is other neural receptors transmit a message to our brain where our intellect informs us we have been injured and we utter “ouch”. This little example involves a complicated communication system that is so fast you don’t have the time to think about saying “ouch” in the same way you type the word “ouch”. Lewis’ example of tree and brains atoms is scientifically sound. |
