Dear Miss Flake:
Thank you for your thoughts regarding marriage. I appreciate your comments and welcome this opportunity to respond.
I believe that the institution of marriage is a cornerstone of our society. Successful marriages help build strong families, strong communities, and help preserve and strengthen the fabric of American society. Like you, I believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman.
Traditional marriage is an ideal that, however imperfectly practiced by the American people, ought to be perfectly preserved in American law, not just because this ideal is so deeply rooted in our religious and social traditions, but because research shows that children raised by a mother and father experience fewer social, health, emotional, and behavioral problems. Clearly, children can come out of other family arrangements and lead very successful lives. But again, the date show that many societal ills occur less frequently among children from traditional homes with married parents.
Thank you again for contacting me on this important issue, and I hope that you will continue to share your views with me in the future. It is an honor and a privilege to serve Oregon in the United States Senate.
Warm regards,
Gordon H. Smith
